MineAfrica PDAC 2009 Report

PDAC 2009 drew 18,000 delegates - down from last year's record of 20,000 - but still impressive numbers. And judging from the attendance, comments and buzz at MineAfrica's booths and events interest in Africa remains strong.

"Events like MineAfrica provide a magnet and a filter - to attract the right people to make our projects fly, and to allow us to focus on those right people. They whittle the forest that is PDAC down to just the valuable core." Dylan Morgan, Vice President, Umbono Capital, South Africa

MineAfrica had its biggest program ever during the PDAC 2009 including six booths at the trade show and the following high profile events:
- Surviving the Global Financial Crisis Seminar in the Mining Industry on February 28
- opening the Toronto Stock Exchange on March 2
- Investing in African Mining Seminar on March 3 with the Canada-South Africa's Annual Mining Breakfast and a Panel Discussion on Mining in Africa: Financing Solutions from Canada (see the presentations at the bottom of this page)

The week kicked off with MineAfrica's acclaimed Surviving the Global Financial Crisis in the Mining Industry Seminar on Saturday February 28 where a who's who of the mining investment community delivered topical and informative content to an international audience. Download the presentations.

MineAfrica's six booths at the PDAC trade show had a mix of mining companies, African governments and service providers.

"...being part of MineAfrica was a truly positive experience for our company, your advice and expertise and also introductions to various contacts was appreciated tenfold....You and your team did an outstanding job."
Karina Rolland, Vice President, NomadiQ Shelter Solutions Inc., Canada

On Monday March 2, representatives from MineAfrica and the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Business' delegation opened trading at the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The highlight on the African calendar at PDAC was the combined Canada-South Africa Chamber of Business 10th Annual Mining Breakfast, MineAfrica's 7th Annual Investing in African Mining Seminar and a panel discussion on Mining in Africa: Financial Solutions from Canada, the latter organized with the Canadian government. The morning has become the premier African mining event in North America.

The breakfast featured an opening address by Hon. P.H.K. Kedikilwe, Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources for Botswana and a keynote address by Gordon Miller, Chief Executive Officer, First Uranium.

MineAfrica's seminar featured a blend of presentations from African governments, mining companies active in Africa, and financial, legal and engineering experts on doing business in Africa. Download the presentations at the bottom of this page.

One of the key benefits of the morning is its specific focus on Africa which makes for excellent networking and relationship building opportunities.

"It was a superbly focussed opportunity to spend a day with colleagues and clients who have business interests in Africa - something that would've taken me months to achieve back home".
Mark Berger, Director, Business Development, E+PC Engineering Projects Company, South Africa

The morning wrapped up with a high profile panel discussing Mining in Africa: Financial Solutions from Canada. The session was informative, well attended and certainly topical.
