MineAfrica at PDAC 2008 Report
March 9, 2008
If you doubt the importance of Africa as a mining powerhouse you weren't at the Canada-South Africa Chamber of Business Mining Breakfast and MineAfrica's Investing in African Mining Seminar on March 4th during PDAC.
Three hundred mining and financial executives, lawyers, and senior government representatives were.
Given how overwhelming PDAC can be an Africa specific networking event is an informative and effective way to remain focussed amidst the chaos - even if it starts at 7:30 in the morning.
The Chamber's breakfast and MineAfrica's seminar have become the premier forum for companies with projects in Africa, governments seeking investment and law firms and experts advising on how to do business in Africa's mining industry.
Keynote speaker Peter Kinver, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Barrick Gold Corporation, delivered a well-received presentation focussing on energy and safety - critical issues facing the mining industry not only in Africa but in mining jurisdictions worldwide.
South African Consul General Nogolide Nojozi provided a welcome and regrets on behalf of Buyelwa Sonjica, Minister of Minerals and Energy, who at the last minute was unable to attend.
Following the breakfast was MineAfrica's "Investing in African Mining Seminar" featuring thirty concise presentations from mining companies, governments and service providers in three concurrent sessions.

In addition to the project updates and topical information in the seminars the morning is ideal to catch up with clients, colleagues, and make new contacts - in one buzzing environment. The networking in the foyer outside the seminar rooms was testimony to that.

MineAfrica also had four booths at the PDAC trade show with twelve companies and governments exhibiting. Traffic was solid but surprisingly less than previous years in the African section of the 400 aisle, due in part perhaps to the change of venue to the South Building.
Despite a snow storm the kickoff African Ministers Reception on Friday night during the World Mines Ministries Forum drew 110 guests.
Thanks to all our presenters, media partners, sponsors and attendees for participating.
A special thanks to seminar moderators Haley Goodwin (miningmx), Darryl Levitt (Macleod Dixon), and Marino Pieterse (Goldletter International and Uraniumletter International).
